Top Eight - ShockHorror Anime Scenes: 8-5

It’s a word because I say it is. In my opinion, some of the best moments in anime are born when when something completely random and inexplicable occurs that just leaves you thinking “Uh… what?”. Even better are the times when you watch a character undergo some sort of maddening breakdown and extreme violence is the only reasonable course of action, and anime violence is truly a wonderful thing. Some of you might say I’m sadistic in that manner, but don’t deny that watching unadulterated insanity in animated form has its charms (especially when it’s a yandere. Yandere’s are awesome), especially due to the fact that the presentation of this madness occurs in many different ways, and the fact that not only the character in question but also the viewer themselves are taken on the equivalent of an LSD trip (not that I’ve ever taken LSD >_>. Drugs are BAD.) Unlike with the last list, this list solely depends on the anime I’ve seen, and if there are any other shows full of mindblowing mindfuckery that I haven’t mentioned, feel free to drop a comment. Otherwise accept my judgement bitch let’s take a look at some scenes in anime which have driven me to become the slightly unbalanced person that I am.

#8 School Days: It’s My Head In A Box Bag.

Never before have I seen so much hatred in the aniblogosphere directed like such a deadly RAGer beam at  a single character. Makoto was a complete douchebag who seemed to think only of his crotch on fire and banging every girl he could meet, no matter what the consequences (Sex made you pregnant? It’s all your fault, I’m going to go and bang Kotonoha now, kthxbye.) or the feelings of those around him, and seeing a cold, stainless-steel kitchen knife plunge into his stomach was one of the most satisfying moments I’ve ever seen. But the real icing on the cake was Kotonoha chopping of his head and… well, the real “Nice Boat” was born. Burn in hell, Makoto. Burn in hell. (Watch Mouryou no Hako, btw. It has a head in a box. That’s UNDEAD.)

#7 Serial Experiments Lain: Philosophy, Identity, And All That Jazz.

SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 12

I haven’t seen SEL in a while, but what I can say with confidence is that about 20% of the messages and/or meaning of this show flew completely over my head. And I’m not even sure re-watching it would help. Every episode carved open my mind, rummaged around for a while messing shit up, then left, taking with it my ability to understand what the hell was going on. But one of the standout moments for me was the appearance of Eiri Masami in episode 12, and his claims that he was God. Not so much the deep and meaningful philosophical talk he had with Lain (complete with body/mind switching, if I recall) but the fact that he turned into some sort of ghostly wire demon at the end that Lain crushes with telekineses. Psychic powers ftw. All of the aimless confusion seemed to be leading to this point as its culmination, and watching it unravel was both Wired and gratifying.

#6 Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni: KILL IT WITH BEATINGS.

Though I was late to the party, I imagine the infamous fourth episode of Higurashi left many n00bs to the series freaked out and confused (just as the rest of the series would continue to do so). The ominous opening of the first episode meant all watchers of the show knew we were heading towards a bloody conclusion, but who could’ve expected such a violent ending? We were all left thinking “WTF just happened?” after Keiichi goes postal on his galz, only to claw his own throat out while ranting about some strange supernatural force,and just as we believe we’re going to get answers in the next episode the show says “Fuck you” and pulls a reset. The reason this scene in particular makes the list (there were bloodier and creepier scenes in the show) is because it encapsulates what got people most interested in the series: delicious harems with insane killer loli yanderes and extreme violence.

#5 Elfen Lied: Don’t Touch The Dog. Seriously.

Lucy <3 <3 <3. You better <3 her or she will kill the crap out of you. You could mosty likely pick any episode of Elfen Lied and come up with scenes so gory and disturbing that they could very well make up their own list of horrifying win. But the combination of seeing those punk kids killing that puppy for their own sadistic pleasure and Lucy’s slight… “overreaction”, as it were, always sends chills up my spine. Throughout the entire scene you can feel her rage building and building until it (and many other things) explodes all over the place.

Next time, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Or crying yourself to sleep. Either way, my job will be done.

    It’s my head in a box, girl~.
    It’s my head in a box!
    It’s my head in a box, girl~.”

    Cause all a girl wants is a head in a box.

    Oh, yeah. Higurashi. I once watched the scene where Rika repeatedly slams her head into a knife at a party with my friends. They were not amused.

  2. um, fucking spoilers much? I don’t mind that you spoiled School Days since everyone knows about Nice Boat, but I’d rather you didn’t spoil people to the fantastic ending of Lain.

    Also, Lain not included, all the other 3 were totally expected from me and none was shocking in the least.

  3. Ah, insanity. Why watch animation if not for the capacity of drawings to go that extra halfmile without shoehorning in CGI?

    Oh, and the anime list you linked to doesn’t mention Elfen Leid, so I’m guessing I can’t use it to predict your next 5 choices. Who knows what you’ve seen? (waits for Evangelion)

  4. @Maggeh
    Self-mutilating lolis don’t amuse them? Get different friends.

    @digitalboy
    Sorry ’bout that. But were they Horrorble?

    @coburn
    Fix’d. Curious that. And no-one said anything about Evangelion <_ < >_>.

  5. don’t appologise untless you’re going to fucking spoiler tag it.

  6. I’m never going to bother watching School days, but I have GOT to get that song. I remember having it a few years ago (when the game first came out, or sometime after that) but I lost it a while ago.
    Serial experiments lain was a series that I was always curious about, but the art made me turn away.
    The Higurashi anime will always keep a special place in my heart, even if the budget was unbelievably bad (who ever did the character designs for the first season should be burned to death in a barrel).
    I’ve been planning to read Elfin lied for the longest time now, but I’ve always lacked that little spark of motivation. However, that lily drenched in blood did it (blood makes most things better in my opinion).
    But, if you are talking about the most shockingly scary thing I’ve ever seen, number 1 would be an eroge called Cartagra. It’s chock full of crazy people, and I knew that it was going to be great when a little scene where a killer was gouging the eyeballs out of a body popped up. The story was really well written though, and the amazing art and music really adds to the atmosphere. Now that I think about, I should go and play it again…

  7. >but the art made me turn away

    D: b-but it’s Yoshitoshi ABe! He’s like… jesus and stuff!!! *owns a bunch of artbooks*

  8. Watched Elfen Lied a while back, ahh the glorious, glorious gore. Truly one of the most disturbing animes I’ve seen.

    Although I’ll take the blood and gore of Elfen Lied over having to watch Bokuna no sexual harrassment. Imouto doesn’t get to pick what we watch anymore, it was ages before I could eat corn again…

  9. One must not forget the crazy One Piece scene where Nami is molested by invisi-man in the Thriller Bark arc.

  10. Man, I knew Elfen Lied was messed up but braining puppies is just uncalled for. Uncalled for! /righteous indignation.

    Serial Experiments Lain had a lot of weird stuff in it and managed to create a sense of unease throughout much of the show. I don’t remember many specific scenes but I’ll never forget the buzzing power lines or the blood colored shadows. The Playstation game’s ending is darker too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....re=related.

  11. That’s it! I’m getting myself the complete DVD of Higurashi. It’s really fun to watch, considering I wasn’t able to sleep for nights due to those killing scenes.

  12. The Blood Soaked Maze arc of Ghost Hunt was pretty disquieting.

    Particularly as Mai during one of her dreams has to go through experiencing someone being murdered…

    Its not really the gore of it, more the psychological aspect of it.

  13. I’ll reserve my judgment and “hey you left out…” nerdery for when you post the rest. But I gotta agree with you on the Elfen Lied one. Overrated anime in my opinion (aside from the gore), but the whole scene leading up to the dog explosion was just plain mean.

  14. Sure these aren’t the top 4? I can’t imagine what you’ll have in store for us next time…

  15. @Choux
    I don’t think I’ve seen that eroge, but an image I found somewhere had a girl exploding into bloodstains in it. If I actually found out where that was from, that would probably be my No. 1.

    And I believe we may have a second blood-fiend blissmo on our hands….

    @D.J
    KILL THE YAOI WITH FIRE.

    @The High School Machine
    I commend you, sir, for still watching One Piece at that point.

    @Rakuen
    I slept soundly after watching them. The violence… it soothes me.

    @D.J
    You have no swayed me into checking out Ghost Hunt. Congratulations!
    Poor poor Lain ;_;

    @otou-san
    I still possess enormous amounts of hatred for them. Such deep HATRED.

    @Baka-Raptor
    I’m pretty sure that everything I do from now on will be amazingly disappointing. But let’s just say next time, things get a little more “psychologically” shocking.

  16. Well, judging from the picture you used, I can only assume Soul Eater made it into the top 4. Maka voluntarily losing her shit was a very “holy crap!” moment and made for one freaking awesome fight scene. One of my favorite scenes so far in the anime, and certainly one of the freakiest (second,perhaps, only to the little girl “eating” the snake).

  17. @ Omisyth, I’m not sure even fire would be purifying enough for that particular title. I really was totally shell shocked, I had no idea imouto was into such depraved stuff.

    Well I hope you enjoy GH, its a bit of a slow burn for some and I’m sure a lot of people found it down right boring, but for some reason I just fell in love with it.

  18. that… scared me. i was seriously scared. just by watching #8, i didn’t dare to watch anymore… it was terrifying.

Leave us some love! *wink*
