Falling into Nothing

You pick it up and start reading…for some time. There is that familiar feeling again, deja vu, to the 10th power. I’ve read this before. Here is one case.

The tale begins on a stormy Saturday, mostly occupied by the capitalistic ritual of purchasing amenities which aren’t sorely required. After the sights and sounds of the mall I came home exhausted, bereft of strength and will, looking for an engaging story to pique my interest. The ensuing internet search for “good dark manga” on google yielded to me a few titles that seemed interesting. One that stood out among these was Hatsukanezumi no Jikan, otherwise known as The Hour of the Mice.

“They” told me it was an interesting manga, about some children, enclosed in some type of Orwellian pharmaceutical experimentation facility. The outstanding premise plus the unique art style made me want to read it…goes to show online people are not to be trusted. I mean, a person with a rationally functioning head on his/her should would not possibly want to even consider laying eyes on the content of Mr. Kei Toume’s work.

You are not sure? Me either. I’m not sure I want to read this, another case of amnesia plagued children. Honestly, the two archetypes in this model seem to be overdone. I mean, I’ve seen manga with children in them, they were interesting the first time I read it. Quite a few titles rely on amnesia as a focal point, using bouts of forgetfulness to advance the plot line. What makes the writer think it will be better to combine the two stereotypes in order to create a mashed scenario? Even worse, the writer does not forget to dutifully include the shy childhood friend, cool older guy, and the serious friend with glasses, into this perpetually growing, infinitely torpid Smörgåsbord of a plot. It’s just plain ridiculous.

Seriously, what the fuck. I’ve seen these fools my whole fucking life.

Hello, shy girl, where have I seen you before? I remember, in 80% of manga I read.

So mysterious, stern…..and arousing? Nope, you were cool the first 30 times.

Of course, the friend with the glasses is the serious guy, the conformist. Heh, what do glasses say about character?

In short, you waste an hour watching characters run around like unknowing rats in a experiment. (Surprise, surprise?)

It is times like these I think about giving up on manga. Is there anything new? Is there anything that I won’t start drooling while reading? Yeah Naruto was great the first 100 chapters. Too many sucky eroge manga adaptations to shift through in this world. Ahah–arg, pirates, for 300 something chapters? You know you see the same guys in everything someone says is new. Is this the fucking end? Is manga going to turn out like Adam Sandler movies, same archetypes with a twist?

Ah, even though one might feel bored sometimes and vent some crazy stuff, they can find themselves wrong. Yeah, actually, even though I bashed on Hatsukanezumi no Jikan, it kept me reading. Maybe I was crazy that day. I heard Naruto’s been pumping out better stuff lately. Maybe I should read it again. It is good to take a break and step back so you don’t overload your brain. This is what I did recently and newer series are fresher to me now. There was plenty of manga on the web list that I didn’t touch. Maybe there are better things out there, and we just need to look for them.

Some Darker Manga

Anyone want to share some good titles?

  1. Wait… did you just DISS One Piece?

  2. before I even start reading, I cannot even remotely imagine that Kei Toume is a man. And I’m fairly certain I’m right.

  3. now that I’ve finished, you’re a damned idiot. Come now, are you really bitching about the familiarity of character archetypes? Have you experienced any form of artistic expression at all? Are you not aware that everything is the same, it’s just the individual portrayal and unique twists that set things apart?

I am not a big Toume Kei fan though her fans are all rabid devotees, especially over Lament of the Lamb. However from what I’ve seen she is very much a proponent of making familiar plots in her own unique style, such as Kurogane which is the same as every samurai story ever, but it’s the Toume Kei version.

Anyway I think you just need to start centering your search on seinen and learn how to research properly. Use manga-updates and open yourself up to a new fucking world of manga. As for my favorite dark manga, read Tokyo Akazukin but e prepared because reading it will solidify your place in hell.

I’m kind of ambivalent towards One Piece, it does feature steady development and reader emotional involvement, but it is friggin long for me. Otherwise its pretty good.(Notice tone change at end)

    @Digital Boy
Ahaha, I absolutely agree with you. I was just expressing some marvel at literary structure in general, albeit in a very crass manner. You sometimes experience fatigue at structures in place, but can’t really do anything about them unless you live in a different dimension or something. Again, I’ve read a lot of manga, but I’ve yet to read more. Glad to see vocal people pointing out certain facts. Yup, just had a bout of temporary insanity?:P (I read Bitter Virgin recently and it was pretty interesting even though its not my usual type).

  5. Well Naruto was getting good again, but they are really starting to drag this current arc quiet a bit.

And there will be RAGE if a certain someone turns up dead next week.

Shoujo is probably, totally not your thing, but Lovely Complex is not your usual shoujo.

Lovey, dovey is definitely not the way I would describe Risa and Otani.

In fact they hurl insults at each other most of the time, I found it funny and refreshing. I’m too lazy for a full synopsis and I tend to ramble anyways so –> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lovely_Complex

And if you haven’t already read it and want to read something twisted check out Dogs: Bullets and Carnage –> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D.....p;_Carnage

Bitter Virgin was a very thought provoking read.

  6. I recommend Kiseijuu (Parasyte). Not too deep, just good pacing and interesting interactions. A bit on the gory side too. I like it a lot.

  7. I’m not really bothered by anime/manga cliches unless that’s all a work has to offer. Of course the best stuff either manages to break away from the formula or to twist it in such a way that it feels new and exciting.

I’d recommend Osamu Tezuka’s stuff if you want to read something that feels and looks a bit different. Or at least when he does use cliches you get the novelty of saying well hell, he practically invented them. Ode to Kirihito is not always dark but it definitely has its moments and though I’ve not read it I hear that MW is his darkest work. Just because they’re so good I also recommend Black Jack and Buddha.

  8. I second the Osamu Tezuka recommendation, most so-called “Manga Kids” at my school haven’t even heard of him because they like the newer techno punk stuff. I remember this one guy who called himself a manga fan and read heaps of the manga that Akira Toriyama drew but hadn’t even heard of Osamu Tezuka was until I told him he was the Astro Boy creator. It remains one of the only times I have publicly owned somebody, and it had a lessened effect since none of the other people in the room knew what either me or the Manga Kid was talking about.

Also, if you can find it, Solanin is a good josei read (remember guys, women’s manga isn’t emasculating, it actually has pretty good stories to tell). With The Light is another josei manga but With The Light is about the difficulties of raising an autistic child in Japan. It was an eye opener since I have a form of the autistic spectrum, and I finally realised that I would have been poorly treated if I was unfortunate enough to be born into a more traditional rather than progressive Japanese Family, were I not Scots-Irish and of a completely different culture.

Last thing I’ll recommend is Read or Die, I actually cried at the end but I won’t spoil it for you and say why. It’s about a secret agent who can manipulate paper with her semi-magic abilities or something. And the main character is unconventionally hot (by that I mean meganekko who is an older woman).

  9. I’ll second Read or Die and sorry for the double post, my original one didn’t show up so I thought I’d screwed up or something.

  10. Hmm, I don’t really care if it fits any stereotypes. If it’s got good art and an engaging storyline, sign me up. Plus, even stereotypical characters develop over a certain amount of time; the nature of the amnesia plot device means that when the memories are recovered you’ll most likely see a new side of that character.

  11. Good to know you’ve got a head and brains. Now read Tokyo Akazukin and give yourself the desire to blow them out : D Seriously, read it, dammit. I need people to go to Hell with me.

  12. @digitalboy
You, me and 53RG10 have already condemned enough people to hell. We must stop the contamination.

  13. @digitalboy
Aight, cool, will check out. Hell is Hawt

As a general comment, I hope that people who have felt like me sometimes benefit from the great titles recommended by our awesome commentators.

  14. I love One Piece, the author is a freakin genius.

My favorite manga is Angel Densetsu. 84 chapters and completed. I can’t claim the manga is all great though. You can tell when the author is going through a slump, but I guarantee that you’ll laugh and be left with a satisfied ending.

  15. You’re the kind that likes generic pantsu manga, aren’t you?

  16. You’re asking if manga is going to end up like Adam Sandler movies… and completely forgetting that pretty much the problem you’re complaining about plagues every single medium of entertainment, from novels to plays to, yes, manga.

Maybe you’d like Keiko Takemiya’s Terra e… - its a bit old, so it isn’t as fresh as it may’ve been when it first appeared, but I am convinced that no one has ever nailed space opera on the head as well as Takemiya did in Terra e… (yeah, I know that’s high blasphemy to Leiji Matsumoto fans, but I think they can deal with it).

Leave us some love! *wink*
